The Advantages and Disadvantages of Cam Locks
A cam lock is a type of locking mechanism that is often used on doors and drawers. It consists of a plug (the “cam”) that fits into a socket (the “lock”). The cam can be rotated to one of three positions: locked, unlocked, or semi-locked. Cam locks are often used in conjunction with a key, but they can also be opened without a key.
The main advantage of cam locks is that they are very easy to install and use. They are also relatively inexpensive. Cam locks can be made of different materials, including brass, steel, and plastic. The disadvantage of cam locks is that they are not as secure as some other types of locks, such as deadbolts. In addition, cam locks can be difficult to remove once they have been installed.
Types of Cam Locks
There are two main types of cam locks: those with a key and those without a key. Keyed cam locks have a plug with a hole in the center that accepts a key. The key is inserted into the lock and turned to one of three positions: locked, unlocked, or semi-locked. Immobilizing the plug in the locked position prevents it from being turned to the unlocked or semi-locked positions. most cam locks without a key have a slot in the front face of the plug that allows the user to insert a coin, paperclip, or other small object to rotate the plug to the unlocked position.
Disk tumbler cam locks are the most common type of keyed cam lock. They use flat disks (called “tumblers”) instead of pins to prevent the plug from being turned to the unlocked position unless the correct key is inserted into the lock. Disc tumbler cam locks are usually more secure than pin tumbler cam locks because it is more difficult to pick them open.
Barrel tumbler cam locks are another type of keyed cam lock that uses cylindrical tumblers instead of disks. Barrel tumbler cam locks are less common than disk tumbler cam locks but offer similar security advantages.
Cam Lock Installation
Installing a new cam lock is relatively simple and can be done with just a few tools. Mostcamlocks screw into place using two screws (included with the lock). First, drill two pilot holes in the door or drawer where you want to install the lock. Next, insert the screws into the pilot holes and tighten them until they are snug against the body of the lock. Once the screws are tight, test the lock by inserting the key (if applicable) and turning it to each position (locked, unlocked, semi-locked). If everything seems to be working properly, you’re all done!
Cam locks offer many advantages over other types of locking mechanisms, such as deadbolts. They are easy to install and use, and they are relatively inexpensive. However, they are not as secure as some other types of locks, such as deadbolts. In addition, once they have been installed, they can be difficult to remove.
